Brenton on Sea

I have not written a travel post in a while, seeing that we are soon going on holiday to Barcelona and France, (see HERE), I decided writing a Proudly South African one would be suitable. We visited Brenton on Sea, just outside Knysna, recently. It is a beautiful coastal town with the longest stretched out almost remote beach. Truly beautiful and a must see.

We only visited for a weekend and it was raining – almost the whole time. I wrote below what we did and some ideas which I believe you would enjoy when visiting Brenton on Sea.

How we spend out time:

– When possible we went down to the beach and walked very long stretches, you will see from the photos the beach really is magnificent.

-When it is a clear day you can walk along the beach all the way to Buffels Bay from Brenton on Sea. (we could unfortunately not do this).

– Have a drink at sunset on the Hotel deck with a beautiful view of the ocean.

– We went to Knysna for breakfast at I’ll de Pain. We bought delicious pastries and enjoyed it with coffee at a beautiful viewpoint overseeing the ocean and lagoon. Knysna (and George) has many wonderful restaurants to try out as well as things to do – I will do a post on this at a later stage and try to focus only on Brenton on Sea for now.

– Stop at Belvedere – it is a small town right outside Brenton on Sea, you park at the church and walk through the rest of the gorgeous town, almost magical.

– Walk or cycle through Brenton on Sea, but be warned it is up and down with hills.

– Stay indoors and play games if it rains, read that book you have been planning to read!

– Braai and enjoy a glass of wine if the weather is sunny.

Do remember that there are not a lot of shops, so buy your groceries before you go. Knysna is close enough if you forget anything, but it is still a drive to get to any proper shops. They do have a small tuck shop with necessities which is a great help.

We saw some wild deer roaming around – great that they are still safe! Apparently Brenton on Sea got its name from Sir Jahleel Brenton, he declared Knysna a harbour in 1818. The area is also home to the Brenton Blue Butterfly, we unfortunately did not see any.

Will we be returning? Definitely and hopefully we will then enjoy much sunnier weather!
